Bijou even by the standards of Shoreditch’s tiny boozers, The Windmill is a newcomer with a slight Italian twist. There’s just one, compact room, deftly smartened up with some splashes of strong colour & furniture that’s classier than the usual gastropub junkshop finds. The menu changes monthly, with sandwiches on rustico or focaccia bread & more substantial mains including polpo alla Sarda – octopus with potatoes, tomatoes & onion salad – or penne alla amatriciana. It’s all pretty simple & affordable, there’s a short list of cocktail standards & the Italian-dominated wine list has plenty of sub-£20 choice, though the selection by the glass is rather limited. Beers on tap include Cruzcampo & Paulaner.
